AI Horizon Scanner
NEW
Save time, gathering, analysing and integrating emerging risk intelligence through your organisation.
To support risk leaders under growing pressure to improve their emerging risk frameworks, we've created a new AI-driven horizon scanning system.
The AI Horizon Scanner, built with the foundations of traditional programming, automates the identification and summary of global emerging risk data from hundreds of highly relevant and timely sources. The system is able to recognise and establish patterns across large datasets to draw conclusions that help inform business decision-making.
Created with a human-in-the-loop, the AI Horizon Scanner fuses the rapidness of AI with the experience of the network; all data is reviewed and validated by our analysts to ensure it's relevant and unbiased.
The intelligence is delivered to our members through a Quarterly Update (pdf), Interactive Dashboard and regular collaborations around the intelligence. As a non-member, download a free sample of the first Quarterly Update from the AI Horizon Scanner.

FAQs
The AI Horizon Scanner is an AI-driven system, built with the foundations of traditional programming, which automates the identification and summary of global emerging risk data from hundreds of highly relevant and timely sources.
Here's how the AI Horizon Scanner works in 5 steps. You can also view this diagram for more information.
1. Gathers data from current sources
Using advanced prompting and Large Language Models (LLMs), the system identifies emerging risks from hundreds of pre-qualified, high-quality inputs.
(Sources include leading open-source news outlets, specialist RSS feeds and peer-reviewed academic studies).
2. Categorises data
To allow for top-down and bottom-up analysis, the data is categorised, using AI, into four categories: PESTEL, themes, factors and signals.
3. Scores the inputs
The system processes sources and respective articles and gives them a score from one to five, based on various qualifiers. Only the highest scoring material is kept.
(Qualifiers include credibility, topic relevance, writer bias).
4. Aggregates insights
Top sources are synthesised and reviewed by our analysts to highlight the top emerging risk themes, factors and signals under each PESTLE category.
(Human checks include: Has the LLM hallucinated? Is it displaying any bias?)
5. Delivers intelligence to members
Members will receive the data as a Quarterly Update (pdf) and Interactive Dashboard each quarter. Through the network, members collaborate on how to use and integrate the insights.
- A Quarterly Update pdf report which details the most prevalent emerging risks each quarter for each PESTEL category by Theme, Factor and Signal.
- An Interactive Dashboard, allowing you to quickly navigate to the intelligence most relevant to you.
- Targeted Peer Collaboration - members address their "so what" questions after reading the report through collaboration in the network; how to integrate the intelligence, transforming the intelligence into significant calls-to-action for the business, embedding the insights into decision-making processes; responding to specific emerging risks trending in the report, for example.
You'll get one PESTEL Category (Political) from the Quarterly Update report.
We hope this will give you a good flavour of the intelligence available for members.

- Use the most timely emerging risk data
The data that feeds into the AI Horizon Scanner is more current that other reports out there. The AI Horizon Scanner looks at news sources, specialist RSS feeds and peer-reviewed academic studies from the previous quarter, finds patterns and draws conclusions from these large datasets. - Benefit from high quality data for your horizon scanning
The data is validated and verified by our analysts and experts in the network. We're combining the rapidness of AI with the knowledge in our network to deliver genuinely useful intelligence. - Understand how your peers are using the intelligence
We're rapidly building up a library of case studies with how our members are using this intelligence to integrate with their ERM frameworks. - Validate, challenge and stress-test your ideas
As well as data and intelligence, we facilitate targeted peer collaboration through the network. Understand what others are doing in response to receiving the AI Horizon Scanner, from revising their emerging risk frameworks and managing specific emerging risks, to engaging their business with the intelligence.
Through Risk Leadership Network membership. We've included the new system as an additional benefit of membership, currently at no extra charge.
Our membership continues to centre around our core service - targeted peer collaboration that supports you with your specific risk objectives.

Risk Leadership Network membership enables risk leaders to meet their risk objectives through targeted peer collaboration.
The AI Horizon Scanner was developed as an outcome of a number of collaborations with our members, all of whom were looking to leverage AI in their horizon scanning.
We're launching the AI Horizon Scanner as an additional and supplementary service to our core offering.
As you may know, every Risk Leadership Network member has a dedicated engagement manager on our team.
To help understand our members' short, medium and long-term objectives, as well as any shifting priorities, each engagement manager has regular contact with their member organisation.
During these regular check-ins, a number of our members raised the priority of 'leveraging AI for horizon scanning'. Many of them lacked the resources and expertise to even begin working on a solution.
So, in consultation with those members and our wider network, and using the expertise in our team, we produced a new system to give our members an out-of-the-box AI horizon scanning solution that can be personalised and integrated in their own organisations.
If you're early on in your emerging risk journey, the AI Horizon Scanner serves as outsourced emerging risk research. You benefit from:
- Timely and high quality emerging risk intelligence - our system scans hundreds of sources each quarter, assesses the quality and highlights patterns, removing the burden of research for your risk team.
- More time to set up your emerging risk framework - by outsourcing emerging risk research to the AI Horizon Scanner, you'll free up your team's time to establish and embed emerging risk in your organisation.
- Intelligence to engage the wider business on emerging risk - whether you share the Executive Summary with your board, send pages on specific risks to SMEs, or use the insights to transform your own reporting, the AI Horizon Scanner will help you start the conversation on emerging risk.
- Practical insights from peers on emerging risk - through the wider membership offering, we'll facilitate bespoke collaborations with relevant peers to enable you to validate, challenge and stress test your emerging risk framework as it evolves.
If you're further along your emerging risk journey, you might join your peers who are using the AI Horizon Scanner to enhance and embed emerging risk in their organisations:
- As an outsourced emerging risk analyst - for some risk leaders, the AI Horizon Scanner will be their main source of horizon scanning intelligence. Meanwhile, others are using the data to validate and challenge their own emerging risk processes, as well as identifying blind spots in niche areas they may not have picked up in their own scanning.
- To enhance board reporting - with clear, evidence-based emerging risk insights, giving you confidence and credibility. You can also proactively provide megatrends data to your board/ExCo with this intelligence at your fingertips.
- To provide sector- or business unit-specific emerging risk insights - our members are using the AI Horizon Scanner in conjunction with their LLMs to make the data more relevant. We're creating a library of prompts that members are using.
- To integrate with their emerging risk frameworks - other members have self-hosted secure internal LLMs along with the AI Horizon Scanner to further tailor the data to their organisation (e.g. revising their risk taxonomy, update their strategy, enhancing their emerging risk framework). We're also creating a library of prompts for members to use.
- To collaborate with Strategy - use the AI Horizon Scanner to work alongside your strategy team to prompt discussion on horizon scanning priorities and scenario planning.
- To validate, challenge and stress test your own emerging risk frameworks, by collaborating with relevant peers through the wider RLN offering.
